[female narrator] army specialist andrew pike was paralyzed while serving in iraq. [andrew pike] my injury was a gunshot wound to the left abdomen from a sniper. my first contact with the paralyzed veterans was in walter reed. [national service officer michael killen] we try to reassure him what benefits are out there, and we try to educate him and take some of that stress away from him. p-v-a did a fantastic job

making sure that he got those benefits in a timely basis. [michael killen] we helped him apply for automobile grants, special adaptive housing and vocational rehabilitation [andrew pike] right now, i'm going back to school to earn a degree. i'm working with a real estate agency in town with my realtor's license. and i'm just spending time with my wife and child, and just moving on with our lives. just as anyone in my age group would do. [female narrator] paralyzed veterans of america helping veterans secure their benefits and rebuild their lives. you can help. visit p-v-a dot org. breaking news tonight at 11:00. multiple people shot and tonight that shooter is out there somewhere. it happened in the 1300 block of north capital street in northwest. ken just got there. so ken, what have you learned so far? >> reporter: an active scene out here. another violent night. five people shot, four of these people are men, one a woman. let me show you what it looks

like. the police presence just increased with the addition of this crime scene unit that just showed up here. again, that suspect still on the loose. police looking for that person. let's show you video of what it looked like earlier tonight. here's what police are saying. they are saying at 9:00 p.m., the sounds of gun shots rang out along the 1300 block of north capital street. once they got here, they found the group of people shot. again we're talking about five victims, four of them are men. one is a woman. one is critically injured. another person was simply just grazed by a bullet. we understand that this may have been the result of some gunfire that erupted a couple blocks away and somehow landed on this group of people hitting them. we spoke to d.c. police captain just a little bit ago. here's what he had to say. >> upon arrival of the units to the scene, they found five adults suffer from gun shot wounds as a result of a group of gentleman or a group of

individuals firing up in the block in the area. the victims were taken to a local hospital and treated at this time. one is in critical condition. the other four are suffering from nonlife threatening injuries. >> police still here on the scene. the suspects, whoever was responsible for the shooting still on the loose. we are talking about a group of three to five suspects. those are men that were seen running away. as you e, an active police scene. they will be out here for a while. we'll let you know what happens. >> thanks. the next time you hear somebody say hey, it's just a little marijuana. we want you to consider the story of a local mom. >> maria lost her only son in a high profile murder case that rocked bethesda back in 2005. tonight for the first time, she shares her story on camera in hopes other mothers never have to experience her pain. here's andrea mccarren. >> >> you shouldn't believe in me considering everything i put

you through. i'm proud to be your son. >> reporter: maria cherishes the letters written to her each and every mother's day by her on son. >> i love you. >> he wrote every mother's day except the year she called 911 to have him arrested. >> he had put a fishing line from his top bedroom window and on the bottom was a bag of marijuana. >> he started smoking marijuana as a high school sophomore. recreation use spiraled into dependency. >> i couldn't take it anymore. i couldn't take it. i was tired of flushing marijuana in the toilet and i couldn't take it anymore. >> after rehab failed, maria made the most difficult decision of her life.

>> i called the police. six officers swarmed our house and they took him away in handcuffs. >> months later, on the night of july 17, 2005, the promise of marijuana led him to a quiet bethesda neighborhood with $3,000 of his friend's money in his pocket. >> as a mother, we all try to protect our children. those last minutes of his life i wasn't there. >> he was meeting three other young people in their car. he thought he was making a marijuana buy. but it was a setup for robbery. >> as his 6-foot body fell on the sidewalk, blood pouring out from both sides. somebody went and reached in his pockets to take his money.

>> they were so close, they had an unwritten rule. when she called, he would always answer. on that night, he didn't. >> i called every hospital trying to find my son. >> at 1:30 in the morning, she contacted police. >> they said just sit tight, somebody is going to come to your house. at that point, i turned to my husband and i said, we've lost our son. when the officer came here, i ran to the street and i said, i have three children. if you think you're going to tell me anything different, you need to leave. >> her first born, was dead at the age of 17. >> he was not a bad boy.

but marijuana makes you make bad decisions. and that's what happened. >> before the murder, bijan tried to escape. he was beaten, choked, and even bitten. losing the top of one finger in a struggle. the man who put the bullet through his head bought a new dirt bike hours later. >> it's not worth it. it's not worth it. it's not worth it. today my son is in a cemetery. that's where i go to see him. >> or she goes to her son's bedroom. >> this was bijan's desk. >> seven years after his murder, it remains untouched. a self-portrait, all reflect a life that could have been. >> i sit there, i smell his clothes because it still smells like him, and look at his

childhood books and that's where i'm closest to him. >> the towels on his bed were never used. the duffel bag packed for his freshman orientation unopened. a proud high school graduate, ironically, he hoped for a degree in criminal justice. >> a special thanks to my mom and my family for always being there for me no matter what. >> three people were convicted for their part in bijan's murder. the killer is serving two life sentences. >> originally when they talked about the death penalty, m like, no. no. this boy belongs to a mother that brought him into this world. >> meantime, maria is serving a life sentence of her own. >> marijuana can kill. it puts you in bad places with bad people. marijuana can kill. >> in bethesda, andrea

mccarren, 9news now. >> donating his arms and legs, his eyes, some of his skin so others can live the life he never had. it is a victory for freedom of speech, but not everybody is cheering about it. a federal judge's decision to require metro to put up a controversial ad at metro stations. this is the same ad that stirred up controversy when it appeared in the new york city subway. it reads, in any war between the civilized man and the savage, support the civilized man. defeat jah jahad. >> the ones who are putting these ads together, they are entitled to their bigotry and hate and we descend that right. is this what we need? we need more tolerant messages. >> that ad is sponsored by a group known as the american freedom defense initiative.

metro has to display the ad by monday afternoon. new tonight at 11:00, a mistake that can't be hidden. the u.s. military spent millions developing a new camouflage uniform for troops in afghanistan. too bad they didn't conceal the troops. james has more. >> in a case of trying to be good enough for everything, but not being good enough for anything. cost the army millions of dollars and put our soldiers at risk. >> the idea was to develop a camouflage pattern that could be used in multiple environments. urban environment, devert environment, and so on. >> phillip is with the washington guardian. awarded the army their hammer award. >> $6 million on development to the uniforms. >> with the wars in afghanistan and iraq, the army replaced the familiar green and brown fatigues with a lighter tan and brown pattern better suited to desert environments. but as the army soon learned, not all deserts are the same.

>> the uniform was much more effective in iraq than it was in afghanistan. >> forcing the army to spend millions of dollars to come up with a pattern better suited for afghanistan. the soldier on the left in the new pattern blends in better than the soldier on the right with the old one. >> the mistake that the army learned from. >> part of that solution may mean that soldiers in the future may need more closet space. >> one thing they are looking at is multiple uniforms, multiple camouflage, instead of having a single, one size, fits all. >> 9news. >> not since nancy kerrigan took a sledge hammer to the knee have we had a bizarre story like this. u.s. speed skater has now come forward to admit that he sabotaged the skates of a competitor from canada and he did it on the orders from his u.s. coach. the tampering took place last year during the world championships in poland. the other skater fell during the race.

right into the spinal column. tonight, patients are being warned to look for symptoms that include nausea and fever. we do have some good news tonight. the unemployment line getting shorter and more americans are finding jobs. president obama all smiles at a rally in fairfax today. that's because the labor department says the economy added 114,000 jobs last month and the unemployment rate dipped from 8.1 to 7.8%. >> but a major drop in unemployment just before the election has some questioning those results. mitt romney is campaigning in virginia today as well. he says many of those new jobs are part-time and that, he says, is not what a real recovery looks like. >> even those that have jobs are having tough times. the middle class is being squeezed with higher and higher costs and incomes that have gone down. >> but history says this

latest jobs report could play a part in the election. no president has been reelected with unemployment above 8% since the great depression. but there is one more jobs report that comes out the first week of november just days before the voting. here in d.c., we are paying $3.91 a gallon for gas. if you think that's pricey, be glad you don't live in california. overnight, prices jumped 17 cents out on the west coast to $4.49. that's the highest in the nation. and in many parts of the state, prices climbed 40 cents per gallon just this week. some gas stations have shut down. there's a supply shortage. a so-called perfect storm in california is what is causing this. a recent fire at a refinery, a power failure at another plant and a pipeline shutdown. analysts say the prices will go up for the next few days. there he is, mr., the price is right. rob wilson is about to become the first male model on the game show and he isn't the only one that wanted this job.

hour in front of an approaching system that will bring us some rain by saturday afternoon. all right, so we'll take a look at our weather headlines right now. the great weather we have out there will continue through the rest of the overnight hours and into tomorrow morning. it will be nice. as we head into saturday afternoon, we're looking for a few showers to develop and sunday looks sloppy. it's going to be a messy one and columbus day monday will be a big improvement from sunday. but it won't be as nice as today was. today is the nicest day we will have in quite a while. right now, 61 degrees in leesburg. it is still 64 in andrews air force base. so our temperatures will be held down by the clouds and showers that we get late tomorrow. this approaching cold front has plenty of rain with it now. it will lose punch as it heads toward us. and then we'll see the cold air start to wrap in behind this system. that will push in as we head into saturday night. the warm air that we have in front of the system is going to go by the waist side and we will see plenty of rain

approach from the south. that will be the sunday rain fall that we'll get. overnight tonight, still comfortable with that low humidity. 53 to 62 for your overnight lows and on saturday morning, it will be nice out there. mostly sunny, temperatures in the 50s and 60s with that southeast breeze and by the afternoon, that's when we will look for that increase in cloud cover with a late shower or storm, getting up to 70 to 78 degrees. looking at the zone. 74 in winchester. 78 in manassas and 75 in warrenton. and annapolis looking good at 77 degrees tomorrow. an isolated storm is possible as we head into the later part of tomorrow. so the next three days, code yellow for sunday. because it will be rainy and chilly. 58 degrees for your high on sunday. monday an improvement here. still a high of 64 degrees. so it's not exactly looking great on columbus day. tabling a look at the seven-day forecast, we dry out just in time for going back to work and back to school.
